The conflict is that once Lucy went to middle school she was teased and was called by other kids “cleaning lady” because of her fear of germs.
She also volunteers at a pet shelter called pet hut where she falls in love with a beagle who was abandoned at the shelter and was named Cutie Pi.
One day when they do a scan of Cutie Pi’s brain they find out that he has rare brain cancer and he probably won’t be adopted so he is scheduled to go to a kill shelter where he will probably be euthanized.
Lucy doesn’t want to give up on Cutie Pi yet, but since she cannot adopt him herself she has to find a way for him to be adopted before it is too late. Even though Lucy tries to post things about Cutie Pi and desperately tries to get him adopted, it is all in vain and she has to bring him to the shelter.
Lucy and her friends Windy and Levi bring Cutie Pi to the shelter and are about to give him up when suddenly her math teacher Mr. Stocker comes and adopts Cutie Pi at the last moment and Cutie Pi is saved.
The overall theme for this book is that no matter how different you are there is always someone who wants to be friends with you and does not care about your differences.
